Project Title

Characteristics and properties of thaw sensible permafrost in a changing climate, case study to guide housing development of Puvirnituq, Nunavik, Quebec.

 

Description of the project research

In periglacial environments, the predicted increase of temperatures will modify the geotechnical properties of permafrost. These modifications involve an increase of active layer thickness, mass movement, creep and thaw-settlement, processes affecting the bearing capacity of the ground. Due to the rapid demographic growth in Nunavik, hundreds of new housing unit need to be built. Therefore, there is an urgent need to properly characterize the permafrost in order to clearly identify sustainable areas for construction purposes, and thereby adapt land-use planning designs for northern regions. The case study of Puvirnituq was completed using a geomorphological engineering approach, which involve the characterization of ice and soils cryostratigraphy, in order to assess the stability of permafrost in a changing climate context.

Aerial photographs interpretation was used to map landforms, identify eco-terrain units and characterize drainage conditions. Surficials deposits of the active layer were mapped in the 2010 and 2011 summer field by excavations while permafrost conditions were characterized by drilling and coring. The cryostratigraphy (quantity, distribution and structure of ice in the ground) of permafrost cores were logged in the laboratory. The 3D cryostructures and the quantification of gas, ice and sediment components of the permafrost cores were defined using micro-computed tomography. The geotechnical
properties of each eco-terrain units were determined by laboratory testing, which included: gravimetric/volumetric water/ice content,
particle-size distribution, bulk density, Atterberg limits and thaw strain.
